Waiting List information

To apply for a Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher waiting list, applicants must meet age, citizenship, income, and documentation requirements, and may be subject to local preferences.

Eligibility Criteria
•    Age and Citizenship: The head of household must be at least 18 years old and either a U.S. citizen or an eligible immigrant. If the head of household cannot apply, another adult may submit the application on their behalf.
•    Income Limits: Applicants must meet HUD-defined income limits, typically at or below 50% of the Area Median Income (AMI) for the local area. These limits vary by household size and location.
•    Other Qualifications: Applicants may need to meet additional criteria, including housing history, criminal background checks, and disability status. These requirements do not prevent someone from applying but may affect final eligibility.

Documentation Required
When applying for a Section 8 waiting list, applicants generally need to provide:
•    Full name and date of birth for all household members
•    Social Security Number or Alien ID
•    Total gross income for all household members
•    Proof of income (pay stubs, tax returns, or benefits statements)
•    Housing history and references
•    Verification of preferences (e.g., disability, veteran status, homelessness)
•    Demographic information such as gender, race, or ethnicity may also be requested 

Local Preferences and Priorities
Many PHAs give priority to certain groups, which can affect waiting list placement:
•    Families with children
•    Elderly applicants (over 62)
•    Individuals with disabilities
•    Homeless applicants as defined by HUD
•    Residents or workers in the local jurisdiction 

Application Process
•    Waiting List Openings: Applications can only be submitted when a PHA opens its waiting list. Some lists are open for a short period, while others remain open indefinitely 
•    Multiple Applications: Applicants may apply to multiple waiting lists in different areas, but submitting multiple applications for the same list can result in disqualification

Additional Notes
•    Waiting lists may close temporarily if the PHA has more applicants than it can assist, and reopening dates are not guaranteed 
•    Applicants should check their local PHA website regularly for updates on openings and application instructions
